Get Ripped with a Low Carb Diet

If you’re relatively new to training, muscle gain and fat loss, then you may never have tried to seriously diet before to get lean and ripped. Unless you are lucky and have great genetics, the reality is that getting in great shape with good muscle definition and a six pack isn’t easy.

There are lots of different diet fads you can try, but the diet that has stood the test of time, and has the best scientific support is a Low Carb Diet.

This approach basically relies on high protein, moderate fat, and quite low carbohydrates – a regime that seems to contradict many nutritionist’s ideal balanced diet. However you can eat much more variety – and much more food than the traditional low fat approach. This type of diet, popularised by Dr Robert Atkins in the 1970’s, and now often referred to as a keto style diet is based on the premise that eating low carb forces your body to become much better and burning fat for fuel.

The Major Benefits of the Low Carb Diet

Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereal, and other mainly "low-fat" processed foods increase your body's production of insulin. When insulin is at high levels, the food you eat can get readily converted into body fat, in the form of triglycerides (to top it off, high triglyceride levels in the body are one of the greatest risk factors for heart disease). Even worse, high carbohydrate meals tend to leave you less satisfied than those that contain adequate fat and protein levels; so you eat more and get hungrier sooner. If you find this hard to believe, think about how you can eat a big bowl of cereal or oats for breakfast and still be really hungry by 10.30am! So what should you do? To get off the insulin generating roller coaster start by cutting down on your carbohydrate consumption, especially the worst offenders: sugar, white flour and other refined carbohydrate products. What can you expect from this? Four wonderful results:

  • You'll start to burn fat for energy: When carbohydrates are your body's primary energy source, you'll rarely use your secondary energy source, you own body fat, for energy unless you restrict carbohydrate consumption. If you permanently change your eating habit, this offers a lifetime of body fat burning.

  • You won't feel hungry in between meals: The biggest battle that most trainers face with cutting up is the constant obsession with food as you are never really satisfied. Again, much of this is caused by blood sugar fluctuations that are aggravated by carbohydrate consumption (especially the refined kind). By cutting the carbs, you'll maintain a more even blood sugar level throughout the day. No more false hunger pains or mid-afternoon brain drains.

  • Your overall health will improve and you'll feel better: Many of the toxins you take into your body are stored in your fat cells. By getting your body to burn stored fat, you allow it to clean itself out. Stable blood sugar also means better hormone regulation – including anabolic hormones. Fatigue, irritability, depression, headaches, and even many forms of joint and muscular pain simply go away. Furthermore, you should see a significant improvement in your blood profile, (including cholesterol and blood pressure levels). You will be able to train harder, recover faster and feel better – all the time.

  • You will retain muscle mass: Usually, when you diet down to lose body fat on a low-fat diet, you also lose a significant amount of hard-earned muscle. The low carb approach uses mostly fat for energy, as this is abundant. And because protein is kept high, it is not only possible to maintain muscle but to actually build muscle, virtually impossible on a low-fat diet.

Some Key Information about Sugar

Sugar is an Anti-nutrient! It contains no vitamins. No minerals. No protein. Nothing of any nutritional value. It is 100% carbohydrate. High levels of sugar in your blood are bad. When you consume sugar your body is thrown into chaos. It works to quickly clear sugar into storage and restore normal blood sugar levels. Sugar in almost all forms (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) makes you fat. Some sugar can be stored away in muscles for energy, but most is converted into fat and stored in fat cells around your body. Highly processed carbs like white flour is its second cousin—almost as bad. When you partner the two together— flour and sugar—it spells disaster for anyone trying to maintain a healthy body, let alone build muscle and lose fat. If they are consumed on a regular basis, the body is in a constant state fat gain and nutritional deficiency.

How to Eat on a Low Carb Diet

Here are some basic guidelines about what to eat and what to avoid:

  • Use a diet tracking app (like My Fitness Pal) to record your food intake and monitor carb, fat and protein levels

  • Aim to eat no more than 50 grams of Carbohydrates Daily

  • You should eat up to 3 cups of salad vegetables or 3 cups of cooked vegetables

  • You should eat whenever you are hungry until you basically feel satisfied (don’t pig out though!)

  • This diet consists of quality protein foods, pure fats (butter, olive oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, mayonnaise etc...) and any combinations of proteins & fats.

  • You can eat a reasonable amount of fat – up to 40% of your calories, what you must limit are CARBOHYDRATES.

  • You may drink water, coffee (decaf), tea, diet drinks (occasionally). Any Drink with 0 carbs is allowed. NOTE: On a high protein diet it is advisable to drink 3 – 4 litres of water a day.

  • Train normally, you should still have plenty of energy after your body gets accustomed to this diet after a few days

  • DOING ALL THIS WILL MOST LIKELY ENSURE A FAST FAT LOSS

What can you eat?

The following foods have virtually no carbohydrates and so can be eaten freely:

  • Meat
  • Chicken
  • Seafood
  • Cheese (Hard cheeses like cheddar are best)
  • Eggs
  • Cream (No carbs - for coffee and recipes)
  • Butter
  • Pork Rinds
  • Salt/Pepper/any Spices or Herbs
  • Protein Powder – Like MAX’S Shred System
  • Artificial Sweetener (like Sucralose of Splenda - in moderation)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Vegetables (non starchy, fibrous veggies)
  • Tomatoes (though also a fruit, you can have some on your salad, etc. It's fairly low in carbs.)
  • Avocados (though a fruit, high in fat and fairly low in carb which is good!)
  • Mustard

What you can drink

Unlimited drinks are:

  • Water (tap, bottled, mineral, soda, sparkling)
  • Diet Soda (moderation)
  • Tea (regular or herbal)
  • Spirits (in moderation occasionally)
  • Coffee (with cream, not milk)

*Note-Alcohol and Caffeine aren't the best things to have when you are dieting, but they are OK in moderation.

The following foods and drinks are fairly low in carbs but you have to be careful not to overeat or overdrink your daily consumption. Those foods are:

  • Nuts & Seeds (of any kind)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc.)
  • Unsweetened yogurt
  • Sour Cream
  • Tomatoes (though also a fruit, you can have some on your salad, etc. It's fairly low in carbs.)
  • Salad Dressings (except French and Thousand Island)

Occasional Drinks

  • Light Beer
  • Wine
  • Champagne

Foods and drinks to avoid completely:

  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Potatoes
  • Cereals
  • Oats
  • Anything with flour in it!
  • Sugar and anything with sugar in it.
  • Chocolate (85% Cocoa solids is ok in moderation)
  • Cakes
  • Other Fruit
  • Ketchup

Drinks to avoid:

  • Regular soft drinks (Cola, etc.)
  • Fruit Juices
  • Sports Drinks
  • Milk

Meal Frequency

Conventional bodybuilding experience recommends spreading your food intake across 6 smaller meals each day. This means you need to determine your daily protein, fat and carbs requirements and put together a daily plan that spreads your intake of these nutrients.

Some newer diet approaches have recently emerged that seem to offer promise in helping trainers shed bodyweight. One approach we like is known as Time Restricted Eating (also known as intermittent fasting). This approach limits your daily food intake to roughly 8 hours per day. The other 16 hours are spent fasting. You still eat the same amount of food, you just compress the time during your day when you eat. Will Shred System Keep me awake at night?

Shred System is a potent fat burning protein and contains a number of ingredients that stimulate your metabolism such as Guarana, Green Tea, Green Coffee and Caffeine.
